Press Release : 02 February 2010 - Download the PDF
Sea Tech Week will take place from 21 to 25 June 2010 – Make it a date.

The 7th international marine science and technology event, Sea Tech Week, will take place from 21 to 25 June this year at the Quartz conference centre in Brest.

The programme for the week and for the various events can be viewed online at the new website at www.seatechweek-brest.org.

Over one thousand professionals working in the marine sector are expected to attend the 7th Sea Tech Week organised in partnership with the OES/IEEE technical professional society. The event provides a forum for multidisciplinary networking and discussion based around conference sessions and workshops on the following themes:operational oceanography, marine observations and marine biotechnology, technology and imaging. New in 2010: Images and Oceans conference sessions and industry presentations.

Science and technology programme for the 7th Sea Tech Week

The OCOSS conference sessions will provide an update on recent technical and technological advances and future developments relating to littoral and ocean observation. Various sessions held over three days will scrutinize tools and practices in disciplines ranging from physical oceanography and marine geosciences to undersea robotics.

Passive 2010 is the second such workshop to be held on issues relating to the passive collection of data and measurements involving no active sensor transmission. Such techniques are used for low-noise and covert detection of objects and characterization of the sea surface, or are deployed in areas where access is problematic. The workshop will bring together international radar and sonar experts as well as researchers studying marine mammals.

The MOQESM workshop will set out the science and technology of the latest methodological and technical advances in sensors (acoustic, optical, seismic, radar, etc.), infrastructures (autonomous and remotely operated platforms, sensor networks and communication) and information processing designed for qualitative monitoring of the undersea environment.

PROTTEC is a European regional collaborative project focusing on innovation and knowledge transfer resulting from publicly funded research. The project team is organising two days of training on major issues surrounding innovation and transfer of research results: managing an innovative project, tools for safeguarding innovation, intellectual property rights and enterprise creation.

Europôle Mer is also organising various workshops and presentation sessions for its members on the progress of its work. Some sessions are open to researchers interested in topics relating to this work.

New in 2010: Images and Oceans conference sessions and industry presentations

Images and Oceans Conference Sessions
Imaging and video are invaluable tools for improving our understanding and study of the oceans, their role and related issues – global warming, accessing resources, biodiversity, natural disasters, population migration to the coasts, etc. – and for facilitating information sharing and dissemination. The Images and Oceans conference sessions will -
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of the constraints and the potential of image capture and processing in the marine environment,
  • Look at the application and evolution of HD and 3D video image production techniques as part of a move to improve understanding, use and protection of the oceans and coastline among the scientific and technological communities and the general public,
  • Offer a forum for professionals working on imaging and oceans – researchers, imaging and audiovisual professionals, agencies, local authorities, armed forces, associations, students and members of the public.

Industry presentations provide businesses and research labs looking to showcase their innovations, latest products and new services with a dedicated space at the heart of Sea Tech Week. The following themes have been selected for this year’s presentations:
  • Marine renewable energy
  • New imaging technologies for marine research (linked to the Images and Oceans conference sessions)
  • Marine observation
  • Marine biotechnologies
  • Ships of the future
  • Sustainable fishing and managing stocks
Sessions take the form of a 30-minute presentation that includes 10 minutes for chaired Q&A (can be altered to suit project content).

Key dates

All information about the conference sessions and events can be accessed via the new Sea Tech Week website that will also shortly offer the opportunity to register online. Subscribe to the STW newsletter for the latest information and details of key dates.

Dates for the submission of papers for each conference session are posted online:

OCOSS and Passive: The themes can be viewed online. Submission of papers for these two conferences is open until 15 March 2010.

Professional trade fair – A place to do business

Sea Tech Week also features a professional trade fair. An exhibition space at the heart of the conference provides a platform for businesses and research labs shaping today’s marine science and technology and an opportunity for those working in the sector to present their expertise to a targeted audience and make new business contacts.
